FAQ

What owners ask before a lawsuit

Short answers here; the guides go further.

A summons just arrived. What's my deadline?

Not long. The deadline to answer is counted in weeks and depends on the court. Note the date you were served and call that week.

Will you take my side if I'm the one suing?

Yes. We represent owners who sue and owners who are sued; about half our cases start each way.

Who do you represent?

Owners and their companies, usually with fewer than two hundred employees, and individuals in disputes about a business they own, run or invested in.

How do you charge?

Hourly, with a written budget for each stage before it begins. Demand letters and contract reviews are flat fees. We don't work on contingency, and costs such as filing fees and experts are billed as they arise.

Will my case go to trial?

Probably not; most business cases settle. We prepare every case as if it will be tried, because that is what earns a fair settlement.

Can the other side be made to pay my legal fees?

Only if the contract or a statute allows it. We check on the first call.

Do you work outside Minneapolis?

Yes. We appear in state courts across Minnesota and in federal court, and meet clients by video.

How long does a business lawsuit take?

A case that settles at mediation often takes six to twelve months. One that goes to trial can take two years.

A question this page didn't answer?

Ask it on a thirty-minute first call.

A first call is free and doesn't make us your lawyers; a signed engagement letter does.
